My Favorite Books About Female Friendships

And yet I’ve spent the past two decades neglecting them. It hasn’t been intentional. It’s just that, as a cisgender female, I was raised to believe that one day, I would meet my soul mate, fall in love, get married, and have children. At that point, my life would revolve around my spouse and child and, to a lesser extent, my job. Everything else would fall away. And though I believe that the concept of soul mates is bullshit, that’s still pretty much how it played out for me....

Our Favorite Comments February 13 18 2012

I’m very intrigued and encouraged by the new model of “‘grassroots patronage.” I think it fosters a renewed sense of creativity and offers opportunities for the creation and cultivation of creative works/projects where they might not otherwise exist. This is particularly true in an environment where more traditional funding avenues are becoming more limited. If it was a project I felt worthy and excited about, yes, absolutely I would contribute. Talent and ambition should be actively and enthusiastically nourished regardless of the avenue....

Out With The Spreadsheets On Simplifying My Reading Tracking

I love spreadsheets. I (clearly) use them at my day job, I use them to keep track of things I do here at Book Riot, and I even use them just for fun. Data and organization are my love language, and charts and tables are my Disneyland. Needless to say, I have spent years tracking my reading with not just one, but numerous spreadsheets, constantly finding more reasons to build yet more new ones looking at this or that particular subset of data or information....

Poet Mary Oliver Has Died

Oliver, who published over 30 poetry collections and is a Book Riot favorite, died at home. She also published essays and books on writing poetry. As a young poet from Cleveland, Oliver wrote to the late poet Edna St. Vincent Millay’s sister to ask permission to visit Millay’s home; the request was granted and Oliver spent several years there with Millay’s papers. While living there, she also met photographer Molly Malone Cook; they were a couple for over 40 years, until Cook’s death in 2005....

Poetry Is Beautiful Because It Is Fleeting

There’s a reason I didn’t even realize I’d read so much poetry this year: I don’t read poetry to remember it. I read poetry to experience it in the moment. I don’t read poetry slowly. I don’t savor it. I inhale it in big gulps. I devour it. I don’t look up words I don’t know. I don’t pause to digest, ponder, or analyze a poem’s meaning. I careen through poems, only pausing for breath when my thumping heart demands it....
