A new movie out December 7 called Mary Queen of Scots dramatizes the parallel stories of these two cousins, who never actually met each other. Elizabeth was born to Henry VIII and his second wife, Anne Boleyn, later beheaded by Henry. As a second daughter, with her younger half-brother next in line to become king, Elizabeth never expected to inherit the throne. But after the deaths of her two siblings, Edward VI and Mary I, she did....
Part of me always resented the fact that I was being forced to learn things I wasn’t passionate about. So it was a surprise when I finally graduated and started working that I suddenly felt an itch to keep studying. Actually, no. Not studying. Learning. For the first time in my life I had the power to choose what I wanted to learn. What’s more, I didn’t need a textbook....
From the Bram Stoker-nominated author of The Luminous Dead comes a gothic fantasy horror – The Death of Jane Lawrence.“Intense and amazing! It’s like Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell meets Mexican Gothic meets Crimson Peak.” —BookRiotSet in a dark-mirror version of post-war England, Caitlin Starling crafts a new kind of gothic horror from the bones of the beloved canon. This Crimson Peak-inspired story assembles, then upends, every expectation set in place by Shirley Jackson and Rebecca, and will leave readers shaken, desperate to begin again as soon as they are finished....

So this time, I tried going the last day instead. Sunday is also half-price day, so I got there before the gate opened and lined up along with another 150 people or so. The place was crawling with people by the time we were allowed in. Including booksellers. If you haven’t been to a book sale where there are booksellers, let me paint a little picture for you. The space is already crowded with books and people looking to buy books (presumably for their homes)....
For all of this disorganization (I swear I used to be a very organized person, but then parenthood), I’m a sucker for a bookish rainbow shelfie (those Penguin drop caps tho) or an artfully designed bookcase with books, momentos, and Funkos. This is why I love Instagram. I can literally spend hours scrolling through the pictures and screenshotting pics for inspiration. The amount of time I spend on Instagram looking for bookstagram feeds is obscene....
So, you’ve decided you want in on this hustle. Now you must consider BookTube vs. BookTok. Which is better? Easier? Who is watching these videos? Which account should you pursue? The Basics BookTube is older, as is the platform that it lives on: YouTube, a subsidiary of Alphabet. These videos are largely in landscape format, up to 12 hours long with a verified account, heavily supported by ads, and widely varied in content....
I’ve written before on the positive impact comics have on your brain. I want to discuss some of the ways I’ve seen students interact with comics in the library I manage and how I’ve seen them grow over the past year. Comic Books as Alternatives The lie: comics don’t count as reading. First, there is a huge stereotype surrounding comics. This prevails even amongst teachers in schools who, often short on time and energy, are only privy to what I call “supermarket” books....
Joel didn’t pose for any of the promotional photos, and the other cast members were bummed that he spent most of his time offscreen journaling. He never once volunteered to drive, but he always insisted on the front seat because reading in the back made him carsick. In the end, most of his scenes were unusable, especially because the transformation recipients did not really understand his role in their transformation....
Dollhouse aficionados take it very seriously. They create intricate works of art on a tiny scale, in perfect realism (or fantastical whimsy). They spend almost as much on a piece of furniture that rest on two fingers as the full-sized version. It’s an art and a passion — something I’ve never attempted. Still, even if you aren’t a dollhouse or miniatures person, I think these tiny bookshelves are worth perusing....
I can’t speak for everyone, but my 2019 self is both unrecognizable to me now and someone I did not long to return to during the worst parts of pandemic lockdowns. One of my first pieces of writing in the pandemic era was about how much I missed the library, but it was never really the library itself that I missed. Sure, I definitely missed its quiet and calming atmosphere that most bookworms revel in, but what I was missing was the extent to which I used to use the library as a shield for all my problems — a version of myself where I had become entwined in a loop of near-constant burnout and anxiety and someone who was seldom ever actually happy....
