Georgia Governor To Sign Book Ban Bill

SB 226 requires principals review all complaints about books from parents within seven days. Three additional days are allotted for the principal to determine whether or not to pull the book. From there, the school board has 30 days to handle any appeals of the decision and post all titles on the school’s website that were removed from the library within 15 days of the decision. All schools will be required to develop complaint policies by January 1, with help provided by the Department of Education, who will have a model policy ready by September 1....

Give Me A Gay Section Not Gentrified Bookshelves

We were both fresh out of the closet and too unsure of ourselves to really do anything fun by way of bars. So we stepped into a historically gay neighborhood’s bookstore. She broke off to look at nonfiction, I went into sci-fi. The books in the sci-fi section were unapologetically queer; amateur photoshopped book cover erotica. They tackled every topic you could ever want—lesbian werewolves, lesbian bondage, lesbian aliens; it felt like I had pulled just the right book and landed in an alternate universe where there was joy and genuine love in queer fiction and erotica....

Great School Libraries A Uk Campaign Promoting An Essential Service

In addition, schools with a higher proportion of economically disadvantaged children are twice as likely not to have one. Primary (elementary) schools are less likely to have a library than a secondary (middle & high) schools. And if they do have a library space, Great School Libraries notes that they are often used as classrooms or meeting rooms rather than what they were designed for: reading and learning valuable inquiry skills, digital literacy, responsible researching, and more....

How I Overcame My Fear Of Reading Contemporary Poets

Seven years later, I not only have several favorite contemporary poets, but poetry collections make up nearly 20 percent of the books I read. Here’s how that happened. Even after that awkward conversation, I had no plans to start reading contemporary poetry until the first day of my Introduction to Creative Writing class freshman year. Dr. Smith—the department chair—told us we would each be writing six poems. That was more poems than I’d written in my life up to that point....

How Rereading Lord Of The Rings Helped Me Cope With My Ocd

At first, I tried to be brave. I kept myself busy by reading, walking my dog, pretending that my day job was the greatest of my concerns. And all the while the fear that I or those I love could die suddenly, with no warning — of COVID-19 or anything else — gnawed at me. OCD was nothing new to me. I was diagnosed when I was 13 years old, with plenty of ups and downs in the years since....

How To Annotate A Book 5 Ways To Get It Done Effectively

What does it mean to annotate a book? Simply put, annotation refers to adding your own thoughts or insights into a book or text. As a non-fiction reader, I’ve always been a fan of annotating my text. Annotation allows me to come back to favorite passages, useful facts, or meaningful quotes. If I decide to re-read a text, it’s always interesting to see what parts of a story were meaningful to me at that point in my life....

How To Be A Reader In A Country Where Reading Isn T A Habit

I’ve always been an avid reader. Since I learned how to read, really. My Mum would buy me books and encourage me from day one, and I’ve never put a book down since. Also, as a reader, sometimes I have trouble saying I’m currently reading YA or erotica, or some chick lit title I discovered on Goodreads....

How To Find A Book In The Library Your 101 Guide

How to Find a Book in the Library When You Have a Book in Mind It’s important to note that all libraries are different. Even within a single public library system, for example, there can be sizable differences in how someone might find the same book. That means, anything from here on out is a generalization and if you’re ever unsure about something in the library, the key is to talk to the staff—that’s what we’re here for!...

How To Make The Comics World Better In 2019

In all honesty, I’ve been pretty fortunate that my comics experience has been positive overall. People are remarkably kind online. Other people can make the comics world … less friendly. That’s enough of such nonsense; if I can have a positive comics experience, then the world can as well. I Almost Died After Giving Birth Lucy Knisley Helped Me Unpack The Trauma

I had no baby shower, no celebrations, no companionship in the flesh as I navigated a first pregnancy that took years to achieve, thanks to infertility. There wasn’t a vaccine yet, and I never left home except to see my doctor. Pregnancy books in and of themselves were elaborate fantasy reads, filled with advice that was likely helpful in an era before masks, before lockdowns, before it wasn’t safe to just air out your feelings with fellow parents at a busy cafe....

I Sh T You Not Toilets Were Designed To Look Like Books Critical Linking January 14 2019

“Other book toilets could be much more humble and portable, and a little sillier. One made in France around 1750, and currently for sale through Daniel Crouch Rare Books, appears to be a plain old folio—but unclasp it, and you’ll find a folded stool with a space for a secreted chamber pot.” I shit you not, 18th century toilets were designed to look like books. “‘Just going to the library and talking to a librarian and their wealth of knowledge on books and material is so amazing to me,’ she says....

I Tried To Teach High School English For A Month Here S What Happened

The first thing that struck me with the overwhelming amount of preparation. My mentor teacher very generously allowed me to teach whatever I wanted for the six weeks I would be there, and luckily, the current BC ELA curriculum is very broad with no mandatory texts (the focus is put on competencies instead). This is great, because you can bring your own passion and expertise into the classroom, and you can adapt to suit your students’ interests and abilities....
