The passing of the 19th amendment occurred in my home city of Nashville, Tennessee, yet even though I went to college in Tennessee and minored in history as an undergrad, I didn’t learn about Tennessee’s contribution until after I’d graduated. I remedied this lack of knowledge by reading, and it’s now one of my favorite periods of history to study. The movement encompasses many of the main social and political events of the 19th and 20th centuries, from abolition to WWI to the treatment of Native Americans and the advent of industrialism and worker’s rights....

How Long ‘Til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin Jemisin is one of the top SFF writers today. This collection showcases her talents, from “L’Alchimista,” about a chef fallen from grace who finally finds a challenge worth her skills, to “Non-Zero Probabilities,” where one-in-a-million chances suddenly become day-to-day probabilities. My personal favorite was “Valedictorian,” a story about a Black girl who refuses to underachieve even though being the best in her class will have dire consequences for her future....

“Under the radar” is a nebulous term that’s hard to define. I exist in a very queer-centric book world, so sometimes I’m surprised when titles that I’ve heard a lot about turn out to have very few Goodreads reviews, or aren’t getting much mainstream attention. Other times, I can’t understand why certain books aren’t being talked about around the queer bookish internet. This list is a combination of both those kinds of books....

Through many adaptations, retellings, and reimaginings, and with the Mary Shelley biopic hitting theaters this month, the story of Victor Frankenstein and the monster he gives life remains one that is known throughout our culture, even outside of literary circles. I went back to the text to see how relevant it is in its original form, and pulled these 40 quotes to show how truly great Frankenstein is. Please note: these Frankenstein quotes are pulled from the 1818 edition of the novel; Shelley edited it significantly for a new edition in 1831, which is the version that was most widely available until not too long ago....

However, it looks like men don’t generally excel well in forging this kind of intimate friendship or deep bond. Let’s face it. Intimacy in male friendships is considered taboo, at least in the U.S. and in some other countries. Saying “I love you” to your bro out of nowhere or hugging them might give off a homosexual connotation to others. It’s just not “normal,” and you may already be overstepping some boundaries....

All this to say, well, I’ve never played any of the Witcher games. I’ve had the short story collections on my Kindle forever, but something else always need to be read first (I’ve since started the first once and am enjoying it though it is definitely early ’90s fantasy). Between the Netflix show and the book, I’ve been craving some decent fantasy and my first thought, as it often is, was to go looking for fantasy comics like Witcher....
