“There are tons of baby names inspired by literature — for example, did you know that the perennially-popular Jessica originated with Shakespeare’s play The Merchant of Venice? There’s Holden, popularized by J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye, and Harper, practically synonymous with Harper Lee, the author of To Kill a Mockingbird. For avid readers, a good book can make an impact for life, and within those well-loved, dog-eared paperbacks is a treasure trove of inspiration from the characters and authors alike....

MacLachlan, born Patricia Marie Pritzkaum on March 3 1938, wrote over 60 books in a career that spanned over four decades. Among her most beloved works is Sarah, Plain and Tall, a novel that earned her the 1986 Newbery Medal, the highest accolade in children’s literature. This story brings her lifelong love of prairies (or rather, of her prairie) to life. Indeed, MacLachlan was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and although her parents eventually moved the family to Minnesota, away from the prairie of her childhood, she carried it with her throughout her life, literally....

A couple of years ago, one of my brightest, most driven students asked me a simple question for which I had no ready answer: “Do you know where I could find a list of the 100 or so most important works of American fiction from the 20th Century?” I didn’t. I knew of more general lists (The Modern Library‘s 100 Best Novels) and Time‘s 100 Best All Time Novels). I also had several major anthologies of American literature, but I had no link, article, book, or other resource to offer, nothing really that might guide his curiosity....

Writers aren’t about to be left out of the bloody fun, no matter their age or gender. In fact, if television is any indication, older female mystery writers are especially adept at catching murderers. And why not? They’re used to figuring out how criminals act, and no bad guy ever suspects the sweet if overly curious old lady is capable of exposing their evil deeds. Over the past 50 years, there have been at least three TV shows that revolve around this very premise....

One way I’m working on this is coming up with creative ways to pick what book to read next. I’m not a reader who has to blow through a whole series before I can move on. As a matter of fact, I like taking breaks between them, because spending too long with the same characters can be tedious (looking at you, Dresden). But simply browsing the shelves doesn’t always do it; sometimes I like to let Fate decide what I’m going to read next....

I say all of this because I want to make it ABUNDANTLY CLEAR that I’m not making light of the very real experiences of too many women in the headlines, and I’m aware of the myriad problematic elements of this show. HOWEVER, this is a book site, and I’m a book person, and I wanted to write about the show so here’s my angle. In addition to everything else Kimmy missed out on—completing her education, normal teenage years, a million things we all take for granted—she also would’ve missed out on tons of great books....
