Saga Then And Now

I knew that Saga had been on hiatus for a while, but I didn’t realize that I could get All Of It, right then and there. Readers, I bought it! I lugged it home and then proceeded to text friends about it, one of whom expressed disbelief that a book that giant would be physically readable. (I do have to have it propped up on something not-my-hands, I’m not going to lie....

Simplistic Comics Aren T Always As Simplistic As They Seem

I could go on about the social messages in classic Hollywood musicals, but since this is Book Riot and not Movie Riot (for the record, I would totally write for Movie Riot, too), let’s shift the conversation to another medium that people often think of as “simplistic.” In some ways, comic books have gotten progressively more complex since they first assumed modern form in the late 1930s. They learned to tackle more serious subject matter and built up an ever larger, ever more convoluted continuity....

Soothe Your Soul With These Pictures Of Books And Leaves

I love the subtle nuances in this leaf’s colours – and that the books aren’t the feature, and yet we are comforted by their presence. Sunday Diversion Words And Remembrance

You might be glad to know that a team of Cornell computer scientists (who likely remember most of what they learned in calculus) recently tested a theory about the role of word choice and sentence structure in our ability to remember what we hear (and/or read). For their study, they consulted the illustrious IMDb (apparently even more respected than Wikipedia in the scientific community) for memorable quotes from 1,000 films, used their own methods to validate the quotes’ memorability, and then compared those quotes to supposedly non-memorable quotes from the same movies (and same scenes, spoken by the same characters)....

The Best And Worst Depictions Of Moriarty S Final Resting Place

Yeah, I don’t think those quotations marks are spoiling it for anyone. Doyle, under tremendous public pressure (and after being offered wads of cash by his publisher), resurrected Holmes eventually. But at the time, Victorian readers were shocked by the image of their favorite coke-injecting detecting machine going over a cliff, even for a cause as just as ridding the world of Professor Moriarty. Not only was the death itself a bombshell, but the manner of death was quite dramatic....

The Best Book Covers Of 2020

As always, I asked fellow Rioters to weigh in on the decisions this year about the best book covers of 2020. You’ll find included a wide range of genres and age groups, including covers you’ll know immediately, as well as many that may be new to you. I’ve done my best to find information about the designers and artists for each of the covers. But finding that information is not always easy, so that information may be lacking in some of the covers....

The Book Pyramid Exchange Is Coming For Your Children

A Facebook friend recently posted this message on her page. My reaction, as someone who loves everything about exchanging books, was instantaneous: “YES!” The details came through, and immediately it was clear: this was a pyramid exchange. Well. Okay. I got the call on a Wednesday. My father had a stroke. There was no chance he’d survive. Could I come? He was in San Miguel de Allende. I was in Los Angeles with no passport. I made a phone call. The Books I Read And Didn T Read While Grieving

February brings a catastrophic winter storm to Texas. I pack my bags to stay at the house of the family I look after during the storm. I give the kids the books I bought them for Valentine’s Day, and the 1st grader reads theirs in one sitting. I’m so proud! I brought books for myself and a pamphlet on caring for grieving children someone gave me. After putting the kids to bed, I call my parents and fall asleep listening to podcasts about movies....

The Importance Of Zines

But before we get going, if you’ve read all of this and are a bit ‘wait, that sounds great but what’s a zine?’, there’s a handy primer here. Zines capture a culture in a way that mainstream, conventional and often exclusionary models of publishing cannot hope to achieve. This paper calls zines ‘underground texts‘ and talks about how they represent often hyper-localised stories told by those who are often ‘on the periphery’ of society....

The N Word Confronting Racial Slurs In Literature

I know that people have taken many steps to counteract the prevalence of this singular narrative, such as not reading books by old white men, especially dead ones, and reading more diverse literature by authors from all over the world. I love these approaches. However, not only are a lot of the books by old white men actually good and worth reading, but they are also the ones that make up the majority of the literary canon that is taught in schools and universities....
