My love affair with dolphins only increased through reading some of the best young adult books I believe have ever been written, featuring a girl and her dolphins. All intensifying my own personal viewpoint that, like unicorns (and Hippogriffs) dolphins only appear when you really need them, and only, like the Great Pumpkin, if you’re really sincere. I honestly don’t know which came first: my love of the sea, and silvery, joyous dolphins in particular, or the YA lit with dolphins in a starring role....

But, for die-hard fans of the dysfunctional family genre, let’s take a look at a few under-the-radar books you may want to consider. What I am looking for are board books that were written in a language other than English and then translated into English for English-speaking adults to read to their small humans. I love that these can differ a lot from books originally written for an English-speaking market. Also, it is one of the ways I’m hoping to diversify the collection of books I have access to. At first, I naively thought it wouldn’t be that much of a challenge....

You guys, I just finished this collection, I have thoughts, as long as everyone else is grading Russell story by story, I want to too, but I want to do it with letters like we’re back in elementary school doing book reports and taking pop quizzes on Spanish verbs. Rock and roll, it’s go time. “Vampires in the Lemon Grove”–C+ Gasp! Shock! C+??? Whatever. I was in the 7th and 8th grades when campaigns like “It Gets Better” and “Pink T-Shirt Day” were first introduced to discourage bullying and address rising youth suicide rates, and while they were indeed leaps and bounds ahead of what older generations had in school, it still didn’t make this baby queer feel any less uneasy in the halls of junior high....

However, annotation is an incredibly useful tool. Before we dive in, here is a brief clarification on annotating versus note taking. For some, the difference is negligible, therefore the research significantly overlaps. Last August I moved to Rotterdam, by far the most international town I’ve ever lived in. Once here, it was easy to find an English-speaking book club, and once I had settled down in town, I wasted no time signing up for one. Bored To Death Book Club is known for two main things: they read only books in English, and they try as much as possible to pick books that are a bit under the mainstream radar....

Now I am someone who has had to struggle with anxiety all her life, and travel has always been a trigger. I was scared of flying, even on short domestic routes. Yet, with the long flights I had to take on my maiden journey abroad and the unforeseen adjustments that had to be made because of the delayed flight, I was not flustered in the least bit. Why to catalog books in your personal library I won’t deny that I can be both obsessive and proud when it comes to my book collection, but there are benefits to knowing exactly what books you have and where you have them....
